Understanding Pain & Adaptation
Explaining the biopsychosocial model of pain and why pain doesn't always equal damage.
Service Description
Workshop Duration: 4 Hours CPD Points: 4 (pending) Prerequisites: Modules 2-3 recommended (anatomy + assessment context helps) This workshop explains the biopsychosocial model of pain. Participants will learn why pain doesn't equal damage, how words create or cure problems, and when discomfort is safe versus when it's a red flag. Essential for trainers working with real humans who have real bodies that sometimes hurt. The law of averages says if you exercise for long enough, you’re more likely to get injured. Unfortunately, most people quit because trainers either ignore it ("push through!") or catastrophize it ("never do that exercise again!"). This workshop teaches the middle path: intelligent and effective coaching to build resilience instead of fear. Also, when to refer out. You'll learn why "perfect" technique doesn't prevent pain and why MRI findings don't predict it. Learning Outcomes: Explain pain using the biopsychosocial model Differentiate between safe discomfort and red flag symptoms Apply placebo/nocebo principles to enhance or harm training outcomes Use language that builds confidence rather than fragility Guide clients through graded exposure to feared movements Recognize when to refer versus when to train through Reframe common pain myths with evidence-based explanations You will experience pain during your life and so will your clients. Learn what pain is, how it's managed and when to soldier on and when to dial back. This is a nuanced approach from the outdated "pain = damage" models. Learn how to coach with/though pain rather than catastrophise it. Special Features: Pain science client handouts (editable) Access to research database Language guide quick reference card "Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional. Fear is changeable." - PURE Movement Education
